Here's my take...

Significant contributors of the last 15 years: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Shudder to Think, Bad Religion, Perry Farrel, Liz Phair (in her Exile in Guyville Days), No Doubt (for being at the forefront of the ska revival of the mid-to-late 90s), Rage Against the Machine (for defining the brief rap/metal genre), PJ Harvey, The Get Up Kids, Dashboard Confessional, Sublime, Belle and Sebastian, and Amy Winehouse (for being the first of a potential load of soul revivalists).

If you're thinking of "rock" on a larger scale, you could include Timbaland, Jay-Z, etc.

Whose sound is interesting (currently): Amy Winehouse, Craig Wedren, Panic! At the Disco, Coheed and Cambria, and Belle and Sebastian.

Where rock is going (the trends): there's a huge revival of grindcore/metal music thriving under the misapplied labels of "emo" or "hardcore". Rock trends are notoriously cyclical. My opinion is that the grindcore movement will start winding down in a few years, and there will either be a glam revival (if Panic! At the Disco's success is any indication, there will be...particularly considering so many popular bands are siting Queen and Bowie as influences again), or something new will emerge. We can only hope.

Hope that helps. Take it all with a grain of salt as I am but a lowly fangirl.

Good Q...

I'd say many of the indie bands that've come along in that time. VERY few of the mainstream bands would be on my list:

White Stripes
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Le Tigre

among others

Gotta agree w/ Trent/ NIN. Huge influence on 90s rock.
