I think it's a great Idea. I think Unions started out just like any other great idea in this country, it was put in place so that companies couldn't take advantage of their employees and the employees rights were protected. But it has been spun into a organization that people abuse. If I owned a company I wouldn't want to pay my employees $20.00 plus to sit on their a$$es and do nothing!!
People take these privileges and abuse them, just like the civil rights movement, women's rights etc. they all started out as good idea's and have been turned into things that are destroying America today!!

I agree with you, meathook and honeybee a thousand percent! Maybe at one time sixty yearg ago, when our country was an industrialist nation unions served a purpose and were much purer in intent. But that ship has sailed long ago. They are now corrupt, run by a bumch of mobsters in cities like NYC and Chicago, designed to strongarm and intimidate people into thinking they have no other options, or are primarily fear based, which is clearly wrong.
And I know from personal experience, becuase I worked for the largest musicians union in our great country two years ago, called the American Federation of Musicians, which represents over 200 musicians unions nationwhide. Every office I called and practically every member I contacted couldn't tell you what the union did for them, except take their weekly dues out of their check, which by the way are NOT tax deductible. And when a member had a grievance, unless the amount was over 1,000 they wouldn't so squat for them. I saw it firsthand when I took those grievances to the president and other top brass and those were their exact words. Utterly corrupt and useless!
For you misguided jaded liberals, which counts for most of you, this was right in major cities, as well as red states, so corruptness and greed are not confined, to your am I blue states. It happens everywhere. You libs just try and exploit people in major cities because of the large numbers of people that exist there, mainly minorities, illegals and the uneducated.
You pretend to love these people, so that you can exploit them for their money and the vote, then when you get what you want you show your true anti-american back stabbing colors and separate yourselves from these groups as fast as you can.
And by the way libs: If your damn union's are so great, then why do they FORCE new and potential workers to join them? Truly great organizations and countries like ours offer freedom, because they know it's so good on it's own merit, that people will choose it of their own FREE WILL and seek it out, like so many immigrants have with coming to america.
They don't need to be sold or told how great america is, anymore than grass or a plant needs to be sold or told how great water is. It's understood. So why treaten others or use fear tactics if your union's are so great to their people? It's because you're losing members hand over fist and thankfully we'll see one more corrupt liberal and stupid old democrat organization kick the bucket.
The only places where unions will last a little longer, are with SAG (screen actors guild, of course actors will say and do anything just to eat the next day, because they're mindless robots who do what they're told and read scripts, because they can't think for themselves,) musicians unions and the UAW, but their times are fast approacing as well. There will be a revolution coming in our country and it won't be too much longer before REAL americans say enough is enough and overthrow all unions and the tax raising members by the liberal congress!

Abe Lincoln positioned a quit to that. States can not secede from the Union. There isn't any provision within the Constitution for a state to depart the union. ( Secede ) I have rechecked my data and a state can not secede from the union. Don't you consider one might have attempted. Not that this is a controversy however considering that the civil conflict none has even recounted it. mrwjrm have got to be a attorney which makes him suspect to start with. NO STATE will ever depart the United States of America. Not even California...Most undoubtedly no longer California. It might revert to Mexico in 24 hours. Would the United States preserve California...I do not consider so. Can Californis preserve off the Mexican Army? NO . Some individuals are so Smart??????

I think it is one of the more important pieces of legislation to come out in a long time. I am a firm believer in negotiating my own compensation package and I can handle myself as an employee.
Edit - Laughingman you are one of those real men who band together and threaten those who disagree with you instead of just being responsible for yourself. Please give me a break. I have worked in union and non union jobs. Union jobs hold the top pay rates down to bring up the bottom rates. Its guys like you who do not qualify to make the highest pay rates that support unions. I don't want to be limited in what I make, ever and thats why I do not support unions. That and the fact that so many moronic candy *** bullies like you belong to them.
I know...I know...reported.

What does it matter? The lower paying jobs that the poorer people of our society do are being threatened by cheap illegal labor mostly from Mexico and the higher end paying jobs are being outsourced overseas to cheap foreign labor. I guess unions are also killing the oil companies??? I live in Florida where in 1988 I went from a union job in Philly making fourteen something an hour to three twenty five an hour in Florida, in 1988. Talk about culture shock. When companies drive pay down enough that we have to compete with illegal and foreign workers to live, something is wrong. Unions fight those kinds of practices so that working Americans can make a decent living wage and the CEO only makes twenty five million a year instead of fifty million. You are supporting unchecked greed with your stance.

I don't live in a Union state.. and we get along just fine.. I think forcing anyone to do anything (outside of higher laws like oh say, not killing each other) is wrong.. so I have no problem with a law that says people can or can not join the Union.. instead of saying they have to .. or saying they can't have a Union....so yeah.. I'd probably support that law.

I support it 100%! Unions had their place a long time ago, but they have no purpose now. I think the union is a rip-off socialist organization that should have been done away with years ago, and nobody should EVER be REQUIRED to join one!

Can you imagine the outcry if I mandated that all my employees join the Knights of Columbus? Why then, is membership in a union any different?
Laughing: Why am I not surprised that a union goon would threaten violence against someone who is against FORCING people to join a union? Please note, there is nothing in this legislation which would ban unions, only mandatory membership.

Sure, let people have a choice. As long as people can decide AFTER they've been hired whether or not they want to join a union. I would join a union. You never know when you're going to need it, though I'd say a lot of unions need to have more backbone, and actually work to improve the employees quality of life. My bf is in a great union, and it saved our backsides. He had to take time off work when his son became ill. We have a "family leave" act in our state, that was passed by voters, saying you can't be fired for taking time off work to care for a sick dependent. His company has a history (pre-union) of firing people for taking advantage of this law, as a way of intimidating others from taking the time off work. Well, they tried to do the same to him and the union stepped in and put a stop to it. Without them, our only recourse would have been to take them to court, and would we have had the time and money to do that? No. We would have had to suck it up and he would have had to scramble to find another job, with hospital bills mounting all the while and no income coming in.

I quit a job when I was 15 because they told me I had to join the union! TO BAG GROCERIES! This is a great idea, and I am very proud that I work in an industry that does not have unions...in fact, the market keeps people in my business honest, and should for every industry!
Flipside is that you do not get the same benefits and pay as a union member...you should fight and negotiate your own, yourself. That would be truly fair.
Pass on the info if you can so we can call and donate too!
