Remove the HD from the bad laptop and connect it with a USB adaptor cable from maplin.co.uk. Lead costs around £30 but can be on offer cheaper.

Assuming it isn't your old hard drive that's broken, I'd take it out of the defunct machine & put it in a 2.5 caddy which you can then plug into your new machine's usb port.
Then you can take the files across from the old drive to your new one, and you'll have the bonus of the old drive as a handy storage area too!

The only way to do this is to buy an external USB drive enclosure. It will need to be a laptop drive enclosure, they are totally different to desktop drives. After recovering your files, re-format it (right click the drive letter and click format) and it becomes a fast backup solution.

If the hard drive is still okay the best solution would be to remove the hdd from the broken laptop. then just insert on the working one ("switch the hdd") it should work.
you can also buys a box for the hdd (USB connected).
now if the hdd is not working it is more difficult but you have softwares like "easy recovery" or "recovery studio" that may help you retrieve information.
good luck
