The most successful at the box office is the latest one, Casino Royale. If you convert everything to current money, then Moonraker was the biggest box office, although it was feeding off the Star Wars craze. I don't think this is the best Bond movie by a long shot. My top faves are:
Goldfinger
Goldeneye
You Only Live Twice
but I'll take any Bond flick over what passes for an action film now....

My personal favorite has always been Thunderball, I guess the underwater climactic battle scene was one of the most spectacular during those days and it's still unsurpassed even today.
P.S. In my opinion, the original Casino Royale starring David Niven, Peter Sellers and Woody Allen was more of a spoof and parody of the James Bond series than a legitimate part of the franchise.

"From Russia With Love", hands down. It and "Dr. No" are closest to the original books, but FRWL is a much better movie (script, pacing, direction). The original books were written in the early-to-mid 1950's, in the early years of the Cold War, and the first 2 Bond films reflect this. No outrageous gadgets/cars/villains, just pure well made spy movies. "Goldfinger" is good, too, but one can see the changes taking place from spy movie to spy spoof w/gadgets. Although "From Russia With Love" has humorous moments, it is first and foremost a spy film. And a cast that includes Robert Shaw (as the blond Russian assassin) and Lotte Lenya as his boss, can't be beat.
The Timothy Dalton movies tried to return to this formula after years of increasingly bad Roger Moore movies, but they were too dour, and boring. The Pierce Brosnan movies tried to bring back some of the early Bond excitement (with some of the best opening scenes ever, esp. "Goldeneye"), but still relied too much on gadgetry.
"Casino Royale" with Daniel Craig successfully returns to the source material and updates it. It's very good, but I still would rather watch FRWL over again.

In my opinion, the best Bond movie is "Live and Let Die." Not only does it have a good story, great chase scenes, and a beautiful woman (Jane Seymour), it also has my favorite Bond theme of all time, recorded by Paul McCartney and Wings.

Usually the next one in the series because they always seem to get better and better. So that makes it Casino Royale up to date.
