I live on Crete (now), and I'm writing a web page. I can't seem to find any where on the web, or any one here (Sitia) that can answer it.

I live also in Crete and will be amazing to know the exact number. Villages are growing up like mushrooms here at the west part of the island. Big companies are building allot of areas that are in fond of the new inhabitants coming from all around Europe, for permanent stay or just for the summer vacations and/or as a second home. Even if someone is able to find the exact number sure does not have count the small villages/settlements.

There is a geographical definition of settlement-village-town-city and it has to do with the number of people who inhabit the place. If it is villages you are looking for then you need to see how many people constitute a village. I suppose one could get a map of Crete and start counting!

Wikipedia has comprehensive lists of settlements by prefecture. I have copied the links below, but I couldn't be bothered to count the villages myself. Anyway, the answer would depend on how you define a village (e.g. do you consider Malia to be a village or a town?)
