Inborn. I don't have one. Those of us with brown thumbs have to depend on "how to" articles to grow things.

MY mother had a green thumb. She could take a cutting, plant it in the wrong soil, in the wrong light conditions, and water it all wrong. That little plant would still grow its' heart out, just to please Mom.

A Green thumb is a Brown thumb that reads a lot and learns "tricks" from others. There are many Garden sites online to obtain all the necessary knowledge to grow things. Some things are harder to grow than others but can be possible with the right info.

As you already know there is no such thing as a person with a green thumb, it is only an interest in growing plants. Anyone can learn to grow things. You choose the type of plants you want to grow and read as much as you can about growing them. Just like baking a cake, you follow the recipe and you get good results. Weather and luck may also have something to do with it. People that say "I just can't grow indoor plants as an example just are not following the growing rules for the plants they chose. It is not hard or magic, plants have specific needs and if you fulfill them they will do fine.

Research what you want to grow and it's just trial and error.

Most people with "brown thumbs" just go at it kinda half-assed and then wonder why their plants/gardens fail.

Get some books on what will do well in your area and even a journal so you can write down results and what you did for failure/success.

It just really takes time, effort, and paying attention. Start small with easy plants and work up. No one just walks out and is a master gardener one day – it takes work.
