In my state, the priority debts are #1-the funeral home and #2, the expenses of the last illness. That's probably similar in most states, so no debts have to be paid if the decedent was destitute.

As his estate will go into escrow it is unlikely any money will be available for funeral expenses by the time they need to be buried. If the body is unclaimed the state will provide a funeral of sorts. His estate will go to pay any legal outstand debts, then distributed as the will dictates. The executor of the estate, where appointed by the will or the court, will see what is available for furfural expense reimbursement if the funeral is not left to the state. No relative can be required to pay any debt that may be left over after final distribution of the estate unless they cosigned for the loan.

If a veteran contact the VA
Check with local authorities/funeral homes/churches regarding "free" burial for those who cannot afford it.
If someone dies maybe the other debts have insurance on them as well.
If someone dies I would guess they cannot be held responsible for any of their debts...can they?

No-even for the funeral, the local govt organisations or the municipal corporations arrange and pay! The debts need not be cleared as the person who owes is no more and no one can fight a dead person!

Consult a public fiduciary where the decedent resided. There are programs out there to help people who died leaving debts.

THESE DEBTS DO NO BELONG TO THE FAMILY. However, if they have any assets, the courts can ask that the assets be sold and the bills be paid.

This person won't be having a funeral if no one can pay for it. That's what paupers graves are for.
