Does it cost anything?

Most states do charge a fee. The process is different depending upon where you live. Most of the time it is simply a petition for change of name followed by one court appearance and an order signed by the judge. Then you must change all of your identification. That's the hard part.

Consult either an attorney or legal document preparer in your area for assistance with the process.
