What would the standards be to appraise such progress of competition?

Interesting question. If I were judging the competition, I would measure on a mix of per-capita GDP, income distribution (measured by per-captia GDP variance), and some sort of human rights measure looking at breadth and depth of freedoms of a nation's citizens.

Such standard is impossible - a "dignity" in one country is considered "disgrace" in another. E.g. honor killings of women, turning the other cheek, etc.

If you want to apply western standard, there are some rankings of human rights by country.

Well, in the US, it's GNP and in the islamic world, it's KIA.
