Is it due to being allowed to spell phonetically in class, or is it because of something else? Is it some sort of text slang? Is it because youngsters don't read as much as previous generations? I was told that children in this generation were supposed to be better educated, but I see very little evidence of that.

Computers are used more extensively over the use of the manual work. A lot of programs these days can correct spelling. However, you shouldn't judge people on spelling on the internet, for sometimes mere typos cannot be corrected. Internet slang is a shortcut to phrases or words and not an idication of spelling ability; it may be mere laziness.

Actually, the younger generation is better educated than in the past. They have more access to tools and information than in the past. New things are discovered all the time, so each generation needs to learn more for continued advancement in society. In the late 1800s, nobody knew of the exististence of bacteria. History will continue to expand as long as humanity exists. In esscense, each generation has to learn more in the same amount time as the older generation. However, because of the change in circumstances, the younger generation thinks differently from the older generation with more emphasis on applying and connecting information rather than memorizing. Abstract ideas can be difficult to comprehend due to being accustomed to concrete information.

The parents of these children are the ones who got social promotions while in school - that is - they could barely read or write but were promoted to a higher grade just to get them out of the grade they were in.

As a result of this they lack the skills to help their children with homework and to give them proper learning habits in school.

There are some teachers who should be teachers but I put most of the blame on the parents.

i think text books don't have ample vocabulary or grammatical stuff, children don't prefer to pay attention to improve this general skill because they are interested in doing many things at a time like watch t.v, play games, do social work, internet .
perhaps few won't get time because of their physical or mental health, their understanding ,retention power is very poor.
perhaps children don't read or do practice of material ,healthy knowledgeable stuff .
perhaps teacher's teaching method is not good or causing such problem or deficiency in their student life.perhaps teacher don't pay attention towards the dictation of students.
