There's no one answer to this, because every author has a different method that works best for them. Some type, some handwrite, and some do a combination of both. Some writers make extensive use of an outline while others like to go with the flow and write wherever the characters take them. Writers are just people, and every one of them is different in how they like to work.
Stephen King has a great book called "On Writing" if you are interested in him in particular. Check out the websites of other authors and see if they have their methods online.

This is from a published writer. You use what's handy. Most writers prefer writing on a computer because your keyboard can ALMOST keep pace with your thoughts. Writing on paper is much slower. However, paper is far more portable and you can always find a quiet place to write on paper.
Whichever way you write, you want it on computer eventually so you can revise without retyping the whole thing. And, yes, even best-selling authors revise between rough draft and what they send to the publisher.

Steinbeck wrote on legal pads, using #2 pencils, in the morning...
Hemingway wrote standing up, and he always stopped writing for the day in the middle of a really interesting scene, so he could jump right in when he started up the next time...
Faulkner used a typewriter.
I ain't a "great writer" yet, but I often scribble ideas and things down on a pad, in ink, and then start putting them together when I am sitting at the computer...

Some use a computer right off, but others like doing a first draft on paper.

It's easiest to write out the full thing on the computer
but nothing beats a scratch out draft on a pad of paper. Just to jot down ideas and thoughts.

I've had three books published and I hate to admit it but I can't type, so I would sit outside under a tree or down by the lake and write them on a yellow legal pad. My wife (god bless her) could decipher my chicken scratches and turn them into a readable text.

It really depends on what works for them -- I think every good story starts with a piece of paper drawing out an outline of the story.
