Stephen King, pretty much any book, heres a few:
The Stand- apocalyptic horror novel, its a long one but well worth it, don't put it down too long or you will forget everything
Christine- haunted car that terrorizes a city, very good read
Four Seasons- four novellas, each pertaining to a season of the year, these are more on Stephen King's non horror side but alot of horror elements are involved
Cujo- rabid dog that traps a mom and son in a car
The list goes on forever, just read Stephen King and you'll be reading some good horror :)

The Lost by Jack Ketchum
It was the summer of 1965. Ray, Tim, and Jennifer were just three teenage friends hanging out in the campgrounds, drinking a little. But Tim and Jennifer didn't know what their friend Ray had in mind. And if they'd known, they wouldn't have thought he was serious. Then they saw what he did to the two girls at the neighboring campsite--and knew he was dead serious.
Four years later, the 60s were drawing to a close. No one ever charged Ray with the murders in the campgrounds, but there was one cop determined to make him pay. Ray figured he was in the clear. Tim and Jennifer thought the worst was behind them, that the horrors were all in the past. They were wrong. The worst was yet to come.

Stephen King's "It" was terrifying for me. Freakin scary clown-monster thing. Dead people....it just scared the bee-jum out of me. The movie was worse. There was this really scary book about the Titanic...I can't remember the name though. They went down to the wreck and it was haunted and there were dead bodies there. Creepy stuff. You could also pick up a copy of "The Year's Scariest Horror". They release one every year as a compendium of the years scariest stories. The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl is good...his other book, The Poe Shadow is alright, but not great. You could try reading Edgar Allen Poe...he's a genius. Also, Ann Rice. My favorite was The Echo by Minette Walters. Hope this helps, Happy Reading!

The best horror book I ever read was Pet Sematary by Stephen King. So much scarier than the movie. It's about a pet cemetary that brings pets back to life. There's also a spooky subplot about the mother's disabled sister.

Stephen King is always a good read. To start try 'Salem's Lot or the Shining, but any of his books are real page turners.
Also Clive Barker is a good horror writer and the granddad of all horror writers, H.P. Lovecraft.
Enjoy, but leave the lights on!

You can always look to the standard Stephen King and/or Dean Koontz, which are both very good. However, you might try Dan Simmons, "Summer of Night" and "A Winter Haunting". Both really scary with unexpected twists and very intelligently written...

If you want to read about a fictional account of Elizabeth Bathory, try Joseph Curtain's "Daughters of the Moon." For a true to life account of this monstrous woman, try Andrei Codescu's "The Blood Countess." I believe he is also a descendant of the Bathory family.
