Hi, I am thinking of moving to the west coast of Florida. I love it there, and family wise, it would bring me closer to them...However, it seems like all the serial killers and child molesters seem to do business or come from Florida. It seems to be a pattern on every news story or whatever. Anyway, if theres anyone out there who has moved from the New Engald area to Florida, and not for retirement purposes, can you let me know the pros and cons realistically? I have heard mixed reviews, and my fiance and I are just looking for some in put. We are in our 20's, and dont have a family yet. I am just looking for some input as to if you regret the move and why, for general reasons of course. Also, how is the job market for administrative work? I have a good income now, and wouldnt want to risk it. Thanks!

I lived in Jacksonville for a year and a half. I loved it. I did not want to leave but my husband was in the military so we had to. I never had a dull moment. I didn't really have any of those problems that you are worried about. I even had chilldren and we all loved it.

You said 1) that you want to move closer to family, and 2) you seem to be looking for a reason to move.

I've been here 22 years and I've seen a lot of changes, a lot of growth and overgrowth, seen a lot of recreational things come and go and yet still more and more things are here. Florida has a need for teachers but teachers, firefighters, etc. are having problems finding rental and purchased accommodations. The cost of purchased housing has doubled with insurance problems. People come here for health sake (depression), for an easier life (getting around is easier), for things to do (lots of new things to learn and fun things to do), for educational purposes (we have several colleges and schools), there is a gas station, a chinese (or other nationality restaurant), a circle K, a walmart, and a church on nearly every block (joking), and because of the influx of people who demand conveniences the conveniences along with the beaches are here. There are no state taxes. There are downsides like taking long to get to work and gas prices are up, I've seen the lower wages here but to some extent that has improved, competition is keen, the state is working to improve the school system, rentals are high, insurance problems, etc. etc. But that's the same everywhere. Since the south is the "bible belt" and although Florida is not considered the "south" still religion reins and strong morals and laws against theft, stalking, child molesters and killers so it's those religious morals that you hear about more often than you would in other states, but crime is everywhere.

It's your choice. People come and go from Florida. I came on vacation and stayed. It's up to you. If you like alcohol then don't come because the laws here are strict on that. Unless you have good benefits like insurance and dental and have a good pension plan from where you are employed now then you "might" want to give Florida a try since your relatives are here. You can always come here on vacation. You can rent for a weekend, or stay with relatives and decide for yourself. Florida has lots of little businesses and the courts support the small businessman.

Check out the Sarasota area, it's a nice area of the state, on the coast, and less crime. Home prices will vary, but this site has a good guide for what all the area has to offer. Supposedly the school district is really great. http://www.michaelsaunders.com/AreaInfo/

If you like hot and muggy weather, yes it would be a good place to live.
