I have a Notebook from Dell. So far no problems. As for HP, I have read some reviews and you may want to do so as well. It is always good to know what people have experienced from a certain product. Especially, if that product is costly.

With that being said, I just went to Epinions and someone in your situation asked about the two competitors. Here are two responses:

I would highly recommend an HP over any DELL because HP is well known for the reliability, customer support, and quality of their products. You can expect to pay more than what you would pay for a DELL but in the long run... you will have quality product.

Hope this helps...

And.......

RE: Don't get HP
having worked on all of them between the three, HP, Dell, and Gateway the only one I can recommend is Sony. You pay much more for the Sony but it is the closest thing to a custom made machine I have seen. And don't by from best buy they pull good components and replace them with cheaper versions. Bottom line you get what your pay for. Of course your better off finding a reputable builder to put together a custom box for you. Local builders are always the best as you can get your stuff fixed without it leaving the county.

In my opinion it really depends on what your goals are for this new laptop. And then you want to check the Customer and Technical Support plan.

Good Luck!

Dell computers suck becuase they costumize alot of the hardware, this means that if ever a component goes out or is damaged by heat or you, you have to buy their parts rather than one off the internet. Their parts are outrageously priced.
HP on the other hand doesn't do this, and for the record, I've had one of both computers. I had the Dell for a year before I gave it away, and I had the HP for 5 and it's still running (gave it to my sister when I built my own) with minimal maintence.

Hope this helps,

HP...Dell may be cheaper...but the "brain" of the computer is small. By th time you add all the upgrades from extra memory and microsoft office etc....you will be paying the same as you did the HP.

I have both and I had endless problems with my Dell, where I had to send it back to the manufacturer twice. I got tired of it so I went out and got another laptop. This time it was an HP, and I haven't experienced any problems whatsoever.

I think that they are very comparable. Dell however has a dedicated processor for video and gaming so it seems to be able to handle more. Plus you can get online discounts w/ dell. See the website below.

Agree "Dell's are HORRENDOUS! "
My company uses Dell and breaks left and right. Don't buy one unless you have complete extended warranty which will cost you more $$$. I never used HP laptop but I trust HP for their reliability.

I work on Dell computers, laptops and desktops everyday, I own HP Laptops for personal use. I wouldn't have it any other way. That is my personal and honest opinion. Hope this helps...

Dell had and maybe has US telephone technical support. Acer still has US telephone technical support. Hewlett Packard is India, at least for call-in first time on issue. I vote Acer, or Dell.

Dell. They have better processors and more RAM too, most of the time. I have a Sony Vaio and I like it a lot. 1.67 intel celeron duo processor, 335MB video card, 2048MB RAM, and a 17" screen. It cost about $1500.
