The UN is supposed to be the World Police, but when leaders don't abide by their decrees it weaken their power. And when a leader says "I don't care what the UN says, this is what we are doing!" it is called terrorism if they are not powerful or "an essential act in the war against terrorism" if they are powerful.
As far as Darfur goes - the same thing happened with the Taliban in Afghanistan. Unspeakable tradegies were going on there everyday and many voices were heard wondering why America didn't do something to help those poor people trapped under a terrible regime. It was not until America had a military interest did they go in to Afghanistan and liberate them.
You tell me what should be done. How much money, soldiers and assistance can we provide? How much do we need ourselves and how much is left over for others? Should we divide it up among all the people who need it or should we commit the bulk of our forces to what seems the most pressing need? This is why the UN (or some type of Global overseeing government) is so important.
Peace!

Excellent question. People are inconsistent in their opinion of America's role in the world because they think with their feelings and believe only what they are told on the news. If people would study history and war and global politics they would better understand that with freedom comes a responsibility to act against oppression. I saw an interesting comment from General William Tecumseh Sherman (civil war); "war is cruel, the crueler it is, the sooner it's over"

I think the foreign policy decision was really to secure safety - iraq was a threat. Although I think that there was also humanitarian reasoning as a background advantage into the war. Mostly to keep the US safe, although do you think that is really happening?
Sad thing is I think more people are critical of the U.S, what shits me is some other nations citizens critise the U,S too when their country is also part of the alliance in the war in Iraq.

Darfur is very unsettleing however causes no direct problems for the world or our country for the time being where as Iraq Saddam was harboring terrorist and shooting at our planes and selling oil on the black market making the area unstable. We for now must have a stable market place to buy from even as bad as the mid east is its better than before.

The US ends up being the world police because no one else will stand up and do anything.
It's sad but true. As bad as I would love to see us act in Darfur, we need to let someone else take the lead. We let the EU take the lead on Iran and you see where that has gotten us....

Well morality doesn't have borders, if someone needs our help then we should help them. Jesus didnt say only help people in your country. - If you believe in Jesus...
I think the EU should start helping out the world, especially France, they have a large debt to america that they should pay.

the people are called Liberals and they wanted us in Iraq before they wanted us out. Now they want us in Darfur and believe me they will want us out when it becomes politically beneficial to them!
