Senseless?!? You're kidding! That was the whole point of Spy Vs. Spy! Classic Good Guy/Bad Guy violence that always made me laugh!

I don’t MIND the violence, because it highlights the senselessness of the spy game, especially in the Cold War era. It was a war, don’t forget, even if it was not open hostilities, and there were episodes when one or the other side got their guys dry-gulched by the other side. If we cannot remember the past, we maybe doomed to repeat it.

if there is purpose to the violence it can not be classified as senseless...
