Sam was trying to get back to the future and to do this he had to destroy Gene Hunt. along the way when a train was being robbed (where gene would die) he woke up from his 'coma'. He met up with his mum and went back to work but then realised that because he was not able to feel anything (pain) that he did not belong in the future.
He decided to jump off a very tall building to get back to 1973 whilst David Bowie's Life on Mars was playing. He then realised that 1973 was where he actually belonged and that he could not remember he belonged there because of post-traumatic stress.
In the end he kissed Annie and lived happily ever after.
Hope this helps but it was very difficult to explain. you really need to watch it. Very good finish to the whole programme.

With both ice caps on mars holding enough water to fill the whole planet with 11ft of water it is possible for life to be still there.
On a more answering point to your question no life has been found on mars yet and because of it positioning near the sun and atmospheric density no life can form there. Bacterial maybe but it hasnt followed the path of the earth.
It could also be that the planet millions of years ago had life but has gradually heated up and died. Could be and current earth issue or that the sun is slowly expanding. and Venus could be developing into a earth state planet.

He was in 1973 in the middle of a train robbery & he promised Annie he wouldnt leave her THEN he woke up from his coma after the op was successful, he saw his Mum & then decided he had to go back so he lept off the top of a high building ending up back in 1973 basically with the girl Annie.

Sam woke up from his colma and life wasn't as good and he couldn't feel the pain suggesting he is dead. He got on top of a building, and it was very dramatic with the music and all, he jumped and returned to 1973, were he saved his mates and every thing turned out allright. Hope that helps.
