My name is Bidahlia Bergundy and parents are world travelers. They only take me with them when school is out for the summer because they believe that children (that's me), should have a stable homelife which means staying in the same school for your education. Anyway, this is the letter I'm leaving for my parents should they ever return. David helped me write it and he agrees it's the right thing to do. Mrs. Honeytones will keep it safe for them as she keeps their house safe and secure as if they are expected any minute. Mrs. Honeytones isn't too crazy about me, but it doesn't matter because I know she is a loyal and faithful employee and will keep the letter for my parents.

I suppose the best place to start would be the week before Christmas. We were all at home excited with the upcoming holiday preparations. Mother and father seemed to have an extra glow around them that the holiday cheer just couldn't seem to explain, but I didn't question them about it. I knew they would tell me when they felt the time was right. The right time happened to be Christmas dinner.

Mother said that they had been invited on a expedition into an unexplored area of South America. They would leave tomorrow, the day after Christmas! She was very excited about it and I must say she hardly let father get a word in edgewise. She said they would be gone for at least two months, but that I wasn't to worry if they were gone longer than that because these things sometimes ran on with all kinds of unavoidable detainments. I would as always be watched over by Mrs. Honeytones.

Well, it hardly seemed worth all the excitement to me, but mother and father seemed to thrive on that sort of adventure - hadn't they been doing it all their married lives? - so I smiled and nodded now and then but in my own thoughts I was planning on how David and I would spend our freedom. I couldn't wait to call him tomorrow!

I fell asleep that night thinking of all the things David and I could do with my parents gone. We could stay up late and watch horror movies. We could eat all the junk food we wanted to with no one to say, "Haven't you had enough?" We could come and go as we liked because although Mrs. Honeytones was supposed to be keeping an eye on me, I don't think she really cared if I was there or not. The last minute preparations woke me from a dreamless sleep that morning and I leaped from bed excited and happy.

Mother! Father! Good morning!

We breakfasted together and then they were away. No sooner were they out the door then I flew to the study and called David. He agreed to come right over.

Those were wonderful days! The first month went as I had planned. Mrs. Honeytones left us on our own and David's parents trusted him. The second month was almost over before I realized that I hadn't heard a word from my parents. I guess that wasn't too unusual because it wasn't like there was a mailbox on every tenth palm tree, was it? So I didn't worry.

After six months of not a word, I started to worry. Oh, not about household expenses. Mother and father had set up a fund that would last practically forever at the rate it was currently used so that was not a problem. Still, it was not like mother and father to go so long without sending at least some kind of letter or telegram.

Another six months and still no word. A Mr. Farrington from Farrington, Peston, and Right, Attorneys At Law, sent me a request for a meeting at my earliest convenince. Of course I phoned and said to come over as fast as he possibly could which was the following day.

Mr. Farrington informed me that my parents had left him with instructions that if he did not hear from them in one year, he was to present their financial situation to me, guide me and advise me, and act as my attorney unless I requested otherwise. As they had been out of touch for a year, he had done as they had instructed him.

It made my head swim! I was just 3 weeks short of my seventeenth birthday and this was almost too much for my mind to take in because, well, because I had also fallen in love with David and he filled all my thoughts day and night! Mr. Farrington, sensing my shock said that he would leave me unless I needed anything immediately and would call on me again in three days. I nodded my head as he left himself out the door.

I called David who rushed right over. David was eighteen and would be moving out of his parent's home soon. In fact, he planned to move all the way across the country. He had wanted me to marry him as soon as I turned eighteen, but I loved my parents too much not to wait for them. Now there was the real possibility they would never be back! What should I do?

The door opened and David stood there with the morning light silhouetting his masculine physique. I didn't think but ran into his arms and he held me close as the tears started. I might never know for sure what happened to my parents, but I was sure of David's love for me and our future together!

I hope the trend reverses. Not because I think girls' names on boys would be nice, but because it would show great social progress. Instead of encouraging girls to become masculine in order to succeed, an acceptance of girls' names on boys would suggest that society has started to value female identities and female history. Realistically though, I think a combination of one and two will happen! Parents will probably choose even more traditional names for boys, until eventually they start using some of the less popular "unisex" names, like Emery, followed by more popular ones like Aubrey and Addison. Perhaps in the end all names will become simply masculine or feminine again... I think I'd like that even more than the reverse trend, and it'd be much less confusing!

I think your teacher would like you to use your imagination and figure out for yourself what it might mean.
