Great question - I thought the government was getting out of my private life when Newt and the Republicans went into the Congressional offices. I haven't seen it yet and now the Democrats control Congress. I just want the government out of my private life. As stated by someone above - read some of those old books. I read them over 30+ years ago and plan on re-reading them again. Big Brother knowing better is what I tend to think of but I really like the nanny state, too.

Because they can.Nobody protests anymore,they just take it lying down while the govt.gets in our faces day in day out.Work all your life,pay your taxes,pay your N.I but if you smoke **** off we are not treating you.Join the army go to war,fight for your country,go through 2WW but if you want a decent pension,**** off there's no money.Get married have a couple of kids,want to go back to work,**** off,no money for child care facilities.
Come to this country from a foreign land,want free medical care for you and your family, here you are .No problem.
Don't want to go to work,here are some state benefits for you and your families.No problem.
Want to have four or five kids with absent fathers.No problem the state will keep you and perhaps you might consider having another child next year.

As far as the eat drink and smoke things perhaps they want to save money by not having to treat loads of obese, alcoholic, cancer ridden people with no self control. I`d like my taxes better used to. I include druggies to somewhere along the way they all make a conscious choice to try the first one so they cant blame lifestyle - family - deprivation. All these ailments give you a choice.

Because it's a nanny state. It's really worrying, the next generation might grow up not being able to use their brains and make their decision if it goes on like this. I hate nanny culture, if I want to eat a packet of crisps, I know what I'm doing!

they are trying to brainwash us,big brother state it would be better if they got on with the job of running the country instead of pretending to care.Why should they worry the more of us that die the less they have to pay out.I am a non smoker but if somebody wants to smoke and it is not affecting anyone why not.The government with their pollution from state run industries belching out sulpher and other poisoness gasses was far more harmful than cigarettes
