Just about any sand will work, as long as it has been screened and cleaned of rocks and debris.

Clean contractors sand will work. Clean, meaning the sand is free of rocks, roots and other solids. I would also suggest you lay something under the sand such as rolled roofing felt to prevent weeds from growing up through the sand and entering your liner. Extend it out at least one foot past the outside edge of the pool.

the other guys are right it needs to be free of debris but they make a powdery chemical we call it blast out or blast away that kills the grass. its a lil work but its probably better to setup the outer ring that the walls sits in anr trace the outline with a shovel and remove the grass totally and then lay the felt and sand
