I personally believe both are not right but it seems legacy is somehow ok in the minds of many who are against affirmative action. Do not give me the BS that legacy is earned, because if your parents or sibling can put up a high HS record to get in why can't you is my thinking. When it comes down to admissions into college it should be about you and your record not your family, race or gender, but what you did and what you had to go through.

I think candidates should only be able to get into college based upon their scholastic achievements only.

It goes without saying that the rich Republicans think legacy admissions are their privilege and right as children of alumni who contribute to the universities' endowment funds.

The white conservatives who are not well off think this is OK because they view the rich as superior to them. It's a class thing. However, on some level, these whites also feel that blacks are inferior to them, and affirmative action violates this pecking order. The ones who are frankly racist are infuriated by the idea that any black can jump ahead of them in line.

I agree, both affirmative action and legacy admissions are unfair, but there are many more legacy admissions than affirmative action ones. I also believe that at many schools, the affirmative action students have higher grades and more ability than the lazy but wealthy whites. The fair solution would be to allow affirmative action based on economic status.

Legacy is the only way that a mediocre student like George W. Bush can attend an Ivy League school like Yale. By the way, did you know that he was turned down by the law school at UT-Austin before he was accepted into Harvard Business School? Apparently the University of Texas has pretty high standards!

properly, i'd think of that socioeconomic is extra suitable than race by way of fact being undesirable is the genuine handicap. regrettably, racial discrimination nevertheless exists and we would want the present affirmative action. the different project with affirmative action is that, for my area, would not create equality in any respect. And is arbitrary too. i'd ideally choose some thing that reward somewhat skill and not race or how plenty money you had. we don't stay in an perfect international nevertheless.

Two way street - legacy typically translates into donations.

As long as the college is private, they should be able to admit whomever they want.

I don't support either.
It should be something you earn. That's why kids today take every thing for granite, it's all handed to them. They grow up to be BRATS.
