It's because they looked daft as teletubbies.

Hey, I'll tell you what. You can ride on the back of my bike. When I am going 65 mph on the highway, then you can jump off. Be sure to wear a t shirt, shorts, and sneakers. If you survive, you will have an answer to your question.
Have you ever seen how people drive out there? Even if a biker is a good rider, many car drivers just don't pay attention to what they are doing. Bikers don't have fender benders. If a biker goes down, a biker gets hurt.

Yes, some are a bit to loud. There are safety reasons if your dressed in bright clothing, I suppose it may help you to be seen.
I tried on a suit and my first comment from my wife was "you look like a tangerine".
I just wear normal black leather now when I'm out for a ride.

The leathers are used to protect and reduce wind drag, the small hump on the back only really comes into play above the national speed limit.
Most people that own these leathers buy them mainly for fashion statements, my self pref are the old school look of just a leather jacket and jeans, which have protection built in.

It is to help with visbility & to ensure that if an accident does happen you are protected from having to have skin grafts of some sort.
Protection is a necessary part of Riding & to do so without them is to ride at your own risk. (Australia has weather that ranges from 50 degrees C to -15 degreees C & you find the Riders that ride all the time actually wear their Leathers all year round & the colours just help with being seen)

The colours are purely aesthetic, they take second place to the actual suit.
The suit needs to fit well or it won't offer any protection, think of your brain, if it sloshed around inside your skull it'd pretty soon be of little use. If you bounce down the road in poor fitting leathers they'll just rip and tear, exposing your skin which a garuantee, is quite a bit softer than leather, exposing your bones, which, well, you'd rather not be seeing - period.
There's a fair mileage insaying that a lot fo the suits are race replica's, hence the bright colours, and these sell the the petrol heads among us. It's like a big pair of shoes, you wouldn't buy shoes that you don't like? so colour is fairly important, especially when you're forking out £500 for a set of one piece leathers. Gaudy, bright colours are par for the course.
Also, it's no bad thing that they stick out like a sore thumb considering the complete lack of care that a lot of drivers show to motorcyclists.
A good one piece suit will save your life if you coe off where cheaper suits, or jeans and a jacket will see you, quite literally, skinned alive.
I guess the question should be, who's the red one, Rossi or Haga?!

The race leathers are really popular and we sell 3-15 sets a week. They range from $291.96 to $1500 at our price. www.cyclemartusa.com
There are several reasons why I wear these. I don’t wear them all the time, only when we plan to hit the twisties hard. When you ride a sportbike it is common to want to hit coroners hard and push your limits a little. With that in mind there is good potential for sliding down the road at high speed. The last thing on my mind is fashion or looking cool.
If you crash at 100 MPH you will be sliding for a long long time. Jeans are worthless and you will be dragging bare azz after 1 second of sliding. Don’t get me wrong I wear jeans for regular riding to bike nights and around town but never to hit the twisties.
The race leathers also have knee pucks used to measure lean angle. Riders need to know how fare they are leaned over and the knee pucks are used as feelers.
Believe it or not the 1-piece race leathers also are much more comfortable than jeans or other gear. It is confidence inspiring and required by all race tracks.

If you check out Coyotee's answer it's pretty well sorted. The answer is all about SAFETY. I'm guessing you are a car driver and us motorcyclists don't like being run into by cars so we try to make it easier for you to see us by using bright colours . Also, if we do come off leather doesn't rip off like our skin so that's comforting. No good in cold weather though.
Cheers,

Because we don't feel like having 2nd degree burns if we wreck. Not to mention we would look ridiculous wearing a bunch of black leather and chaps.

ok, here is an honest answer.
Safety
1,To be seen by people in cars. the brighter and flashier the leathers the easer they see.
2, for the protection leather offers a person on a motorcycle.
3, leather need to be snug to properly protect the person wearing them.
now, all of my leather is black and grey, most of the time when i am street riding i wear textile pants that have a wide leg cut. my leather pants are just black.
up until this year my bike was red, my new bike is silver and black. since i got a bike that is lacking in color i have had more close calls that i care to list. its really amazing how the color makes you stand out more to a person in a car.
