you need to be relaxed and normal with them... dont put on a fake act. you need to become freinds with them before they will respect you. you cant think that being mean or nasty will earn respect... kids are smart enough not to fall for that... they will just react and have even less respect for you

One of the keys to gaining the trust of children is to be firm (mean what you say and say what you mean), be fair (No special treatment for anyone) and be consistant (Do make a decision and then arbitrarily change it for no reason). Establish expectations. The rest will fall in place naturally.
