2. Add to aqueous NaHCO3 (sodium bicarbonate) solution. If the molecular weight of R-COOH is suitably high so it is insoluble or sparingly soluble in water, the NaHCO3 will dissolve it. NaOH solution would be too strong, because it would also dissolve high-molecular weight phenols.
