during the exponential (or log) phase - phase B - when active cell division and cell wall growth is occurring

this is when the bacterial protein synthesis apparatus is most active (and hence susceptible to attacks by macrolides and tetracyclines) and when cell wall growth is occurring and the bacterial cell wall is able to be attacked by beta-lactams (penicillins and cephalosporins and the like)
