No--because at least I know what I would be getting with hugging a rattlesnake--with my family I never know

Yes - although I like the analogy of getting a root canal better since visiting my family is typically a long, drawn out affair that's painful throughout the entire process and leaves me with an annoying throbbing sensation for a while afterward.
I love 'em, but it's painful to spend much time with 'em.
However, I find it's a little bit easier if they come to visit me since I have the home field advantage.

now see, that really depends. By "family" do you mean my mother-in-law? Because, yes I would have to say that I would much rather hug...hell...MATE with a rattlesnake than spend time with her or take part in more of her planned family get togethers.
But the rest of my family (FIL, hubby, kids, aunts, uncles, siblings and siblings-in-law)...love hanging with them, wish I could do it more.

Not really !
You have a chance of recovering from a rattlesnake bite.
With my family, there is no getting over them.

Only one half- my mother's side are a bunch of unhappy, divorced, uneducated, drug addicted, gambling, thieving, suicidal alcoholics who undercut one another at every turn- and they cannot cook and have no friends.
My father's side are all happy, family oriented, working, college graduates with wonderful spouses and a great appreciation for sitting around the table eating, laughing about old times and loving each other- and man can they cook!

My wife and 2 children no, not at all.
My father and my step mom or my mother in law? More like hugging an 800 pound grizzly bear while swimming in a stream of piranhas.
