She dresses since a few month all in black, wear lacey gloves, wears a long black coat, wears heavy black boots, wears a dog collar with huge spikes, paints her face all white and the eyes really dark (black) with 3 black lines underneath, black lips, black finger and toenails...her attitude is different. She seems to know it all better and belittles everyone in the family...
She prefers her own group of goth teenagers. One looking scarier than the other. This is also how they go to school with this look.
My questions:
Is that goth culture a satanic culture?
How can we snap her out of it?
Does anybody have experience with their child who went thru such a phase?
Any comments how to deal with this all?
All comments/suggestions are highly appreciated!!!

Great answers so far...yes, her parents are divorced. Nobody seems to care in the family. I love her, but I have never dealt with teenagers before , so thats why I am asking this question. But as most of you think this seems to be ok and just a phase....

The goth culture is not satanic it is derived from the Gothic era of history, which was a dark era..
Be patient and she will out grow it all on her own. If you push her she will most likely rebel harder. Only making the issue worse.
My oldest daughter went through a punk phase and had several goth friends. It is just a social rebellion.
The best way to deal with it is to ignore it and act as if she looked normal. The more of a fuss everyone makes over this the more she will get a rise out of it. My advise is to make her think that none of it bothers you and that takes the fun out of it for her and she will get over it on her own.
Good luck and much patience!

1. Some Gothic cultures are Satanic some aren't. Satanists don't hail satan, perhaps you didn't know (look into it). Well, they aren't suppose to, but some kids probably do anyways.
2. "Snapping" her out of being Gothic should not be done by sending her to a pastor or counselor. Trust, me that only makes her hate everyone even more.
3. I'm 20 so i can give you some real up to date info. I had a friend who did the whole leather jacket thing and painted his face, but finally when he got out of high school, he realized that it's just retarded. (especially if you're not in a band). In fact, all except for one of the gothic kids i knew are not gothic anymore. (I knew 6)
It will go away. Just keep an eye on her. Let her realize it herself. Keep telling her that you love her. The more she feels loved the better, even if it looks like she doesn't care. (well this is more for her parents).
Sometimes, if it goes Too far and they start doing illegal stuff, then don't hesitate to call the cops. (some do, some don't do illegal stuff, you can't generalize goths) Sometimes that's the only way to change. **If not, then when they are forced to get a job, then they will HAVE to change!
oh and one more thing, maybe her parents could be to blame for some of this. What's their history? divorce? abandonment? maybe not though...

Gothic culture is not satanic in general. Its just a fad she's going thru and will eventually burn out on it. There are worse cliches out there, goths are just over dramatized. It only becomes a bad thing if you start to harm yourself. Watch her closely and you should be fine.

my sister is goin through the same
with most people its just a phase that will fizzle out
when she gets older. i think they do it to b different and to luk cool (funny thing is they all luk the same and absolutely stupid), u dont have anything to worry about.
But their isnt anything wrong with being a goth, they dont all worship satan and sacrafise little animals. lol why would you want to snap her out of it though as long as shes not doing drugs and is doing good in school. jsut leave her to be who she wants to be, the more u try and make her "normal" th more she'll want to be a goth.

It's a stage and sooner or later they realize how silly they look. Then they'll get rid of all their black things and dress like normal people again. Back in our day, we had preppies. Now we have goths. It all passes in time. She won't be a 50 year old granny in spider webs...she'll come out of it way before then.

Why yes, i do have experience in this field.
As a matter of fact, I'M A GOTH. To answer you question, gothism (yes, that's a word) is satanic culture and your daughter is in danger of being addicted to drugs and other controlled substances. (I used to be...) She might develop a crush on Dolly Parton.

Try Family Counseling. If the family's issues are cleared up, then the kids start behaving normally.
