I lived i around Gettysburg all my life and have completed many researched articles in this arena.

Fact 1: The Union army defeated the confederates at Gettysburg.

Fact 2: The confederates were able to penetrate the North all the way to Carlisle, Penn. 30 miles North of Gettysburg.

Fact 3: Up until Lee's army crossed the Potomac River an invaded Pennsylvania, the Confederates fought a defensive war.

Fact 4: With the confederates losing the battle of Gettysburg, it proved a turning point for the Union forces. Up until July 3, 1863 the Union won no significant battles.

The battler of Gettysburg was a Union victory. It was fought for 3 days in July of 1863. It was the last time the Confederate army invaded the North. On April 9th, 1865 General Lee surrended to General Grant, at Appomattox, Virginia bringing an end to the Cival war. The North was victorious.

The Union won. Although one might suggest that there was no terrific victory on the battlefield, rather the Union won when the Confederates abandoned the field and withdrew southward.

This battle is considered to be the 'high water mark' of the Confederacy. This is as far north as any of their main armies would go, and from this point onward into 1863 and 1864 the Confederate armies would win no significance battles that would affect the outcome of the war. (although they would win a few they didn't change the general progress of the war).

Gen. Robert E. Lee has often been the subject of critics for his tactics during this battle, including his decision to mount 'Pickett's Charge', a straight forward attack of his troops across an open mile of fields, attacking up hill, into entrenched artillery.
