Edmund Halley (1656-1742) was the first person to calculate the path of a comet and predict when it would be seen again. Halley's Comet was named in his honour even though he did not discover it. Historical records show that Halley's Comet has been observed for more than 2000 years. Halley's Comet is only about 10 kilometres long. Halley's Comet follows a long elliptical orbit around the Sun. It takes about 76 years to complete one orbit. The last time it came near the Sun and the Earth was in 1986.
