By refusing to take any responsibilty after the war. During the Treaty of Versailles, Germany got blamed for everything (even though other countries had contributed to the chaos), and had to give up land as well as pay massive war debts to countries such as France and Britain. Naturally they couldn't afford it after having spent so much on weapons etc, and Germany collapsed.

Interesting note: Hitler was a messenger in the trenches in WWI. He was angry with the unjust Treaty of Versailles. Therefore, in a way you could blame the Central powers for starting WWII...

And "cowardly" is a very subjective term you won't find easily in serious history writing.

For example, I personally, consider the use of poison gasses as "cowardly". But, surprise, both sides in WWI did it! In my opinion, if anybody wants to be seen as "heroic", they should fight their enemy with a broken beer bottle. YMMV.

I find this question very strange. How were Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire cowardly in WWI? I'm sorry I don't know the answer.
