I have a little rock pond (it's empty) on the side of my back patio. I'm going to a nursery today to get plants, seeds, etc. I'm thinking about doing a little water garden. Can you give me some tips on plants that like moisture but don't really need full sun?

Most pond plants like full sun, but will tolerated some shade. If your spot is very shady, you'll have to get a little inventive. Calla lilies and Peace Lily are both actually bog plants. They will take some deeper shade and live in wet conditions, although neither does real well fully submerged. Lizard's tail will do OK in partial shade, as will horsetail and parrot's feather.

There are a couple of varieties of water lily that tolerate light shade, but don't expect the performance that you get will full sun lilies.
