hypothetiucals as to why they are smiling at you? (like, are they hitting on me?, are they smirking?, do they want something? etc etc)
or do you simply smile back and think --oh what a nice person?

I smile back and think wow that was nice for someone to smile for a change.

Hmmmmm...mostly I just smile back and think they are nice...but on occasion depending on the look that accompanies the smile you can think other things.

if its just in passing i just smile back and not think anything of it. otherwise i probably would wonder why someone smiled at me.

it makes me feel good, especially if that person isn't normally all that nice.
