It is possible for someone to have altered smell. Many pregnant females will tell you so. Some prescription drugs occasionally interrupt normal smell perception.

Abnormalities in the sense of smell often affect the ability to taste because the olfactory system plays such an important role in eating and 80% of food appreciation comes from olfaction. Without the sense of smell, we can only taste sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and savory. All other tastes are determined by the sense of smell.

So basically, anything that disturbs your sense of smell will affect your sense of taste. If you are really concerned, you should ask you doctor about it.

Taste is mainly contributed to by the smell of food, so they are closely related. Perhaps you are just remembering other things, and this triggers a smell memory. Such as, if you want to eat an apple, but accidentally pick up an onion and bite into it, the next time you bite an apple, it could trigger the smell memory of an onion. It need not be other food. Every time you eat a carrot, it may remind you of a memorable time when you ate it, say, on a horse drawn carriage, or at a picnic, with all the associated memories and smells to go with it.
The spicy smell while eating hot cross buns reminds me of my Mum's apple pie, because she used to add it to the top of the pastry. Sometimes i can imagine myself eating and tasting it.
Thank you, you have just given me a great memory.

What your describing isn't exactly this, but it sounds a bit like synesthesia. Have a look, wikipedia does a good page on it.
