Hello. I find myself needing to get a laptop, but I don't have a grand or so to drop into one. I'm looking for a laptop that is priced $600-700, that's primarily going to be used for heavy Photoshop use. (big images, 15+layers). Can anyone point me to a general direction? I've searched myself but find the number of choices a bit overwhelming, and I'd like to get a good idea of what others suggest. Thanks!

Ohh, your options are a bit slim here.

I would usually go with a good brand name laptop, but you probably want to head for something second tier (not cheap, I have bought cheap ones, and when they break, they have to sent back to Taiwan for repairs).

Your problem is to work effectively you need several things.

1. RAM RAM RAM. Lots of Ram. 1GB or as much you can afford. You can lesson the burden on your computer by using XP or even windows 98, as these operating systems use less RAM than VISTA (though Vista should be better if you have lots of RAM).
2. Hard drive space. Cheaper laptops have small hard drives. Mine is filled with my digital camera photos. So you will need to get an external harddrive (maybe not right away, but say in 6 months).
3. A good screen. There are cheaper laptops, but the screens are terrible. Whatever you do, go to a shop and look at the screens before buying.
4. Processor speed, but realistically this is not that important. There are ways to work around this.

Finally, if you don't really need portability then buy a desktop. They are much more affordable for this type of work.
