Allow a day and a half, each way, to get to the center of the reef from Brissie, more if you are going to sightsee along the way. I highly recommend the drive. Made the trip form Brissie to Cairns a couple years ago. The drive was spectacular. We took four days, each way, but we stopped numerous times along the way to make friends, camp, swim, and generally enjoy the trip. At Cairns we went up in the mountains and did a fantastic horseback trek through the hills and valleys. A lot to see and do!

Hi Jess, To get from central Brisbane to the closest end of the Great Barrier Reef you need to drive to Hervey Bay (3hrs to 3.5 hrs by road) and then fly across to Lady Elliot Island which is about level with Bundaberg. The reef is still excellent for snorkelling or diving even that far south. I have been to the reef at a number of different spots from north of Cairns to Lady Elliot and can tell you that this will still give you the "real experience".

you cant get a simple answer these days can you.

approx. 14 hours drive from central brisbane to townsville

taking it easy on the way - with a few stops and take in the scenery especially if driving the coastline or you could stop overnight in rockhampton - split the trip up in 2 days - otherwise it is a long days driving - depending on how many drivers

and 3-4 hrs more from townsville to cairns - go and see Green island across from Cairns beautiful

While the Barrier Reef stretches further south than the Tropic of Capricorn (say Rockhampton) it is patchy south of about Proserpine/Airlie Beach. From central Brisbane to Rockhampton will take you 7.5 to 8 hours on the road depending on traffic conditions, then about another 4 to 5 to Airlie Beach. I suggest you check the RACQ site -

It depends on which end of the Barrier Reef you want to go to. The reef is 2000km long. It stretches from about the Whitsundays to Cape York.
