Everything in the PC is a performance bottleneck remove one, or raise it's performance and then the PC will perform at the speed of the next slowest component.

Your question is so vague it's untrue.

People keep suggesting that "1. A LOT of software installed" slows performance. This is RUBBISH. Having a lot of software is only an issue if it all has processes and services that run every time Windows loads, regardless of whether you use the application or not. All these processes, like system tray items, eat resources. If these are removed then the amount of software installed is not an issue.

well it is mainly the cpu(processor) and the ram. the more ram you have the faster the computer will be a the more programs can be run together at one time. the cpu determines the same thing almost. it is better to get a great cpu and descent ram, but with no ram or less than 512mb the computer will be slow.
the processor is not upgradable easily, but ram is. you just buy the ram, make sure it is correct for your computer, put it in and there. it took me about 40 seconds to install.(including opening package)
