x/3 - 9.4 = 8.7.

x/3 = 8.7 + 9.4.

x = 3(8.7 + 9.4).

x = 3(18.1).

x = 54.3.

9.4 + 8.7 = 18.1 x 3 = 54.3

I think this ? needs rounding up.

9.4 + 8.7 =(18.1) 18 x 3 = 54

Hey if this is your home work ignore my answer as this is purely a guess.

taking the number as x

therefore, (x/3) - 9.4 = 8.7
=> (x - 9.4*3)/3 = 8.7
=> x - 28.2 = 8.7*3
=> x -28.2 = 26.2
=> x = 28.2 + 26.2
=> x = 54.3
so the required number is 54.3

Let x = a number
Equation
1/3x - 9.4 = 8.7
1/3x - 9.4 + 9.4 = 8.7 + 9.4
1/3x = 18.10
Multiply both sides by 3
3 (1/3x) = 3(18.10)
x = 54.3 ====> the number
To check:
1/3x - 9.4 = 8.7
1/3(54.3) - 9.4 = 8.7
18.1 - 9.4 = 8.7
8.7 = 8.7

1/3x - 9.4 = 8.7

1/3x - 9.4 + 9.4 = 8.7 + 9.4

1/3x = 18.1

3(1/3x) = 3(18.1)

x = 54.3

The number is 54.3
