Never be ashamed for who you are. Learn to stand up to false criticism or overgeneralization and make the realize it is hurtful even if it is a joke. You owe it to your people and to your own feelings of justice to stand up for yourself.

I know what you mean, I am half Filipino and to tell you the truth people think that we are like that because of what many of our kind do to foreigners. I went to Boracay beach a few months ago and everywhere I'd look there would be a young girl clinging onto a foreign old man. I actually heard one say, "If you buy me this I will love you", some girls think that by marrying into money they will be freed from the poverty of our country. If the gold digging women won't stop what they're doing, the perception of people towards our kind will never change. I admit, it is very embarassing, I too am somewhat ashamed. The truth really does hurt. But nomatter how embarassing it may be, there are still lots of gold digging Filipino women hoping that they will marry into wealth, that's how desperate they are. They eliminate the love in order to prosper. But then again, I am not generalizing our kind. My mother married my father because of love and not because of wealth. Some girls think that it is the only way they will be able to succeed. I guess they all just need a taste of education, and a slap to make them realize that life isn't about how much money a person may have, its about the ways you live it and succeed... the civilized way...

I wouldn't be ashamed. I lived in the Philippines for 4 years and found them to be generous and friendly people. Believe me, Filipinos have nothing on the Chinese when it comes to avariciousness (I'm Chinese by the way so its not racism). There are negative stereotypes associated with almost EVERY single culture and yours is no exception. Just so long as you're happy with who you are, who cares what other people think? Their ignorant generalizations are not a reflection of you as a person.

As sad as it may seem, a great majority of our countrymen here in the Philippines are poor. Kapit sa patalim as they say. People will do anything to survive, living is paramount you know. Admittedly, SOME could really resort to that if only to survive.
Perhaps you are lucky and blessed that you are not like most of the Filipinos who are poor. Do pray that a lot of our countrymen may someday have a good quality of life like yours.

I've never heard that before. My best friend since middle school (I'm 27 now) is Filipino and that couldn't be farther from the truth. I know his whole family and none of them are like that. I hope this can restore at least a little faith in your heritage.

Try to look beyond that. People will critersize (spelling) when they have nothing to do.
Also if you think they are being true, maybe you can use that to your advantage and see how you can change. Remember, you can't fix anything if you don't know it's not broke.
