I'd say Pearl Harbor, since it awoke a 'sleeping giant.' The invasion of the USSR came within a hair's breath away from a German victory. The blunder on the eastern front (in my opinion) came with the decision to fight an urban battle in the streets of Stalingrad with a blitz krieging army.....

you could talk about the technological advancements that came from the war.

the v-1 and v-2 led to the modern rocket age.

Jets, computers, synthetic materials, new medicines, industrial modernization, improved sanitation etc... these were all ultimate contributions of the war.

I was trying to find a good site about "Operation Paperclip" but it is mostly conspiracy nut job sites.

if you want something more about battles, Stalingrad is a great one, technology was useless it was literally a battle with no front lines, brutal hand to hand, house to house and often times room to room combat. http://users.pandora.be/stalingrad/

or how about the Warsaw uprisings the ghetto uprising and the uprising of 1944. The citizens of the city literally lived in the sewers and created their own city down there, they ran schools, hospitals, they had a postal service and shops in the sewers to protect them from the Germans. http://www.warsawuprising.com/res.htm

best of luck
