As part of my new job I have to wear business attire, long pants, business shirt, and a tie. I didn't have much money, so I bought some clothes from an op shop that fit comfortably, the only problem is that if I do the top button up, the collar is too tight around my neck and gives me a headache within about 10 minutes that doesn't go away until I undo the top button. I want to know if I can get away with wearing a tie with the top button undone until I can afford better fitting clothes.

well done you on the job and for being resourceful on buying your clothes, i will say top button undone can look a bit untidy, but the trick here is to either-sew your top button on with elastic thread-a few pence will buy a bobbin, that way it stretches slightly when its fastened, or even easier, once you have opened your button, re adjust your tie so it looks like your button is fastened, keep your tie over the opening, i bet a lot of guys wear it like this and you dont even notice!!

Good luck with the new job!

You can actually buy a kind of collar button expander which is a small piece of elastic that fits around the actual button with another button to go through the button hole in the shirt. I think they cost about a dollar.

Yes.... most definitely. In fact, with a windsor knot tie a top button undone looks neat!

That is how I wear my business shirt and tie.

Let us know how you get on!
