The Mariners Cross - is a good luck symbol for Christian Sailors. Do a google search - or start here :
http://www.sortprice.com/reviews/14k_Gold_Mariner's_Cross__14k_Gold_Mariner's_Cross

or :

www.nauticalgoldcreations.com - I know Hector and he does exquisite work.

Also, a gold coin beneath the mast -step is good luck. If you cannot unstep the mast or that position is a problem then a gold coin affixed to the mast is ok. We have both the Mariners Cross in gold and a gold coin for good measure.

Boats in the mediterranean often paint an eye on the bow of their vessel to ward off the evil eye. Some sort of talisman with a depiction of an eye may work? See link.

Sailors are so superstitious they will count almost anything as a good luck charm. At various times we have put our faith in a piece of red plastic attached to our boat's bow, and a small glass of dried flowers gathered in Brittany. Ellen MacArthur sacrifices ginger biscuits (cookies) to the great god Neptune.

What about a brass sign reading "God does not deduct from our allotted lifespan the time spent sailing"? (http://www.nauticalia.com/uk-info/signs/1664.html)

Or more usefully, a barometer?

Can't think of a good luck symbol but it is considered bad luck to whistle on a boat. Perhaps you could make him a plaque with this information.
