I was told they "cross their hands in front", but there are many places to cross ones hands... Can anyone describe it for me?

They step forward with their hands to their sides.
At the same time that they start bowing, they slide their hands (all fingers are together) into their lap. The tips of their fingers touch, so it makes a sort of triangle. Also remember to bow your head too while bowing.

Your arms are straight, palms facing the body, cross one hand over the other, slight bow.

As the pictures on the websites show, not only do Japanese women bow in this way in, but also Japanese men.

In Japan, when bowing , we often cross our left hand over the right hand in front of our body. The origin of the gesture is that a person want to appeal that he or she don't intend to use its dominant hand (right hand)to attack (eg. puncing, pulling out Japanese sword, &etc) other persons by showing them his or her right hand is grasped by the left hand.

we press our palms together, place them in line with lower face, then we bow.
