Can a asteroid impact vaporize a person.?

I hear the heat from a asteroid impact is 2 to 700 times hotter then the surface of the sun,one person say that the impact from a asteroid impact can vaporize a city,is this true.

The Barringer Crater near Winslow, Arizona was made by a small meteorite about 50 meters across. The crater has a diameter of 4,000 feet (1,200 m) and it is about 170 m (570 ft) deep. Most of this earth and rock was vaporized. The blast has been estimated to be equivalent to 9 megatons of TNT. Organics (people, animals, and plants) in the area would have vaporized microseconds before the actual impact. The missing earth and rock represents an area 9 city blocks in diameter.

A small asteroid, say 500 m diameter would mass 1,000 times this meteorite, carrying with it 1,000 times the kinetic energy. If it impacted on land, it would likely produce a crater 24 miles in diameter. For purposes of scale, the island of Manhattan is 24 miles long. Should such an asteroid impact the largest city of the world (currently Mexico City) there would be no evidence remaining that a city was ever there.
