People at my job seem to mysteriously become darker towards the end of winter and early spring even when theres a blizzard out. Well it's not too mysterious because they are more then happy to tell any and everyone their latest tanning story. I just don't get it. Why do people turn there skin brown as if they are preparing a sirloin steak that needs to be cooked just right for a group of guests.

Hi... I agree with you, I think it's a little gross looking when people go overboard with tanning and make themselves look like steak :P However, that really is just taking tanning too far and can in itself be dangerous for your skin.

I think, people going too far notwithstanding, most people get lots of emotional and psychological benefits out of being in the sun and experiencing getting sun and warmth on their skin (your skin creates Vitamin D with sun exposure, and we need that to some extent). Further to that, I think that there's a health association that we make with skin looking brown and toasty and a little rosy as opposed to pale, that is, with no color at all. I mean in many cases, when a person loses color and looks slightly pale, we may often automatically think that that person is sick or tired.

So I think tanning obsession starts in a good place (wanting to look slightly healthier) but just gets taken too far...

First of all, I would like to suggest there is a difference between "pale" and "fair." "Pale" suggests that you're not well. "Fair" suggests you just don't have much pigment in your skin. Secondly, I have to say that when I was a teenager and in my 20s, I was like the people you work with. I thought getting a tan was just the most wonderful and important thing. However, now that I'm well into my middle age, I wish I could go back in time and NOT spend so much time baking in the sun. I realize all that exposure to the sun now means I'm more wrinkled than I would have been if I had used serious doses of sunscreen and not cooked myself so. I think those Goths might be on to something ...

It is looked upon by many as being sexy and looking as if you have been at the beach or on a cruise. Go back two or three generations and people covered up to keep from tanning because it was associated with "field hands", people who worked in the fields for a living.

i do no longer think of of it rather is needed in any admire. countless human beings do no longer even look good tan, yet yet they tan basically because of the reality they think of of being tan is needed. i think of of diminished pores and epidermis seems greater beneficial useful, regardless of the easy actuality that it rather relies upon on the guy.

because too many people think that is the way to look good. They think without a tan they're not sexy. I know people who are embarrassed to show their legs without a tan.

i am pretty pale skinned and i think that it is insane the way that no one is really ever comfortable with their skin tone.

i like the fact that i am pale. it shows who I am, and i'm not going to change that just because i want to go to show off my latest tanning extravaganza.

Because they think it makes them look rich and glamorous. I think it makes them look fake and old though (depending on the source of their tan).
