I've recently decided to get into Star Trek, and watch each Star Trek series (yes, it will keep me busy for a while!)

After which specific episodes should I view each of the movies?

I would suggest watch in the following order. Keep in mind that the order below is not fully chronologically a correct timeline in Star Trek mythos. I just think that the list is a good place to start because of events starting in one show will lead to events in another show.

1. Old school tv series Trek with Kirk, Spock, & Bones.
2. Star Trek I
3. Star Trek II (Note: Trek movies 2, 3, and 4 can be viewed actually as one long trilogy due to the events of one movie directly lead into the next movie.)
4. Star Trek III
5. Star Trek IV
6. Star Trek V
7. Star Trek VI
8. Star Trek The Next Generation Seasons 1-7
9. Star Trek Generations
10. Star Trek Deep Space Nine Seasons 1-6
11. Star Trek First Contact
12. Star Trek Insurrection
13. Star Trek Voyager Seasons 1-7
14. Star Trek Nemesis
15. Star Trek Enterprise Seasons 1-4
16. Star Trek Tribute Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80_HKdvNhgA
Note: The tribute video is a great way to end it as it encompasses all the Trek media out there.

Watch the movies after you watch the original series or while you're watching the original series. But certainly watch the movies before you watch the Next Generation, up until 'The Undiscovered Country' and then watch The Next Generation and then you can watch the movies 'Generations' 'First Contact' and 'Nemisis'.
When you decide it's time to watch the movies, start with the 2nd Star Trek movie, The Wrath Of Khan. It's a sequel to one of the old tv episodes called 'Space Seed' and is awesome! Then follow that with The Search For Spock and The Voyage Home. Now you're ready to go back and watch the first one, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The reason you don't want to watch this first is for one, a lot of changes were made (for good reason) after this movie. Changes in uniform and things like that. The movie is also a little more drawn out that the rest and if you're not 'really' into the Star Trek universe yet, then The Motion Picture won't appeal to you much. But if you wait until after The Voyage Home, then you will absolutely LOVE The Motion Picture for many new reasons. Then you can finish off the 'original cast' movies by watching 'The Final Frontier' followed by 'The Undiscovered Country'. Then watch at least one season of The Next Generation before finishing the movie series (the last 3 mentioned way-above...lol). Hopefully, you'll have this done, or at least the first few movies, before next summer when the newest Star Trek movie is expected. It will be a prequel of sorts about when Captain Kirk & Spock went to Starfleet Academy to become what they became. :-) I watched The Search For Spock last night...lol Have Fun! Watch Long & Prosper! lol

The movies were made years after the series so you should watch them after you've finished the series. You can watch all of the movies prior to Star Trek Generations and then you can Start watching Star Trek The Next Generation. Conveniently all of the Star Trek TNG movies were also made after the end of the series unless I'm mistaken and I don't think I am.

Now that I've realized I'm a walking stereotype I may as well go answer some questions about comic books, computers, video games, The X-Files, and zombies.

After you watched all 70+ episodes of the original series, you might want to start with the first movie, Star Trek, The Motion Picture and continue to Star Trek V - The Undiscovered Country.

Star Trek - TNG is next in the series. While the TV episodes were, IMHO, better than the original, the movies were not close to the quality of either the series or previous movies. The TNG movies could be skipped. But if you really wanted to watch them, there were 4 movies in this genre, with the 2nd one being the best.

A long time Star Trek fan,

Rob

The series isn't really connected to the movies.

In that, I mean that the characters are all there and it will give you a very good idea of the premise--don't forget it was on during the most turbulent decade in the country (not counting the civil war) and went after all us peaceniks out there.

The early shows will also give you a beginner's view of the technology. Phaser, not laser.

There is only one episode where the plot ties in and for the life of me couldn't tell you the title. Well, it starred Ricardo Montoban as Khan Noonian Sing--head of the master race. He is in The Wrath of Khan.

As the saying goes, all odd numbered star trek movies suck and this pretty well holds true. But don't let that stop you. Don't forget---this influenced Spielberg.

Do the first series then you can get into the movies but don't stray into ST:TNG movies til you have several years of the show under your belt.

Also, Captain Kirk, Mister Spock and Ensign Smith beam down to a hostile planet. Who's going to die?

Live long and prosper.

watch Star Trek pilot the cage, the series then watch the movies, some aren't very good but it is better to see them in order, up til Generations then watch TNG, and watch some of DS9, and watch the rest of the movies. Maybe watch Voyager, but skip enterprise, it could have been a good show but they tried to back track like star wars did, and with the same type problems.

All of the movies take place after the original series (they had to, because the actors were much older). Movies with the Next Generation cast take place after the end of that series. You can look up the year each movie was released and watch them in that order.
There haven't been any theatrical films based on Deep Space 9, Voyager or Enterprise (yet).

All the movies take place after the original series.

You do not have to watch the series in chronolgoic order. Watch them in the order they were produced. Your Trekkie sense will fill the the sequence.

Watch the TV shows first, they're basically in chronological order and the movies pretty much follow sequentially - the crew in their lives AFTER the television timeframe.
