I guess that would depend on what kind of ant you are talking about. The Black Garden Ants are usually harmless, and are the most common ant I think you'll run into. And then there's the Black Imported Fire Ant, which, I think might do the same damage as a Fire Ant. But I'm not entirely sure as the wikipedia has crap information about it...

I saw alot about ants today when i looked it up. There are several different dangerous ants. The fire ant and the army ant. Both are rather hard to find for the most part. Fire ants i've seen they are little and red. You usually find more than a few at a time and when you find them they bite. Usually they won't kill you are anything they just bite and it hurts really badly. So if you ever incounter them get away and wash them off. The other one i found information on it the Army Ant apparently they are brown or reddish. and grow from 8 to 12cm. They are dangerous but are mostly found in S. America but they can cover and kill a cow in a matter of hours.
So apparently color does matter the red ones are the dangerous ones... the red ones bite.... and if there is enough can be dangerous.
