The advantage is no panty line.
The disadvantage is yeast infections. Thongs are the worst type of underwear to wear, and because it's a small piece of fabric crammed in you, your vaginal area isn't allowed to breathe, so there's a lot of moisture in the way which will lead to yeast infections. They are uncomfortable as hell and if you have a bubble butt...even more uncomfortable, and this is even if the thong has a skinny string in the back. Not to mention...if you are a normal woman that experiences vaginal secretion caused by sperm from your partner, the liquid that comes out when you're ovulating or if you're on your period...you can't wear thongs unless you want to stain your pants. Even the panty liners meant for thongs don't work because they don't have enough fabric to hold onto, so they fold in half, basically defeating the purpose they were meant to do.
So if you want to stay healthy and dry...cotton bikinis or boy shorts are the way to go. They're much more comfortable and there are styles that do provide minimal panty line show through.
Also, if you're wearing regular cut underwear, or bikinis and experience bunching or extra fabric, then you either bought the wrong size and need to go down a size because you aren't filling out the seat of the panties, or you need a different brand. I learned this in a book about sewing lingerie...even if the panties fit you but you still have bunching or the fabric rides up, this is caused by uneven placement of the elastic on the legs. If there is more elastic gathered on the top of the butt, then it's going to bunch or ride up, but if the elastic is correctly placed under the butt and more around the legs, they will stay in place. This is because it produces a more natural, round shape in the panties to fit the round shape of a butt.

The advantage is not having panty lines. Make sure you get them big enough or else you will have lumps though. You also never have to worry about underware riding up, because it is already there! It was really hard to get used to at first, but that is all I ever wear now. There are so many different types, so I am sure there is a style to suit almost everyone.

Just another way to conform to the superficial expectations that exist in our society.
Also, thongs=no panty lines and no granny panty bunching in clothes.

Thongs are an aquired panty. The upside is... when you wear regular panties and get a wedgie it's huge and uncomfortable. Thongs already give you a little wedge but you get used to it. It's preference.... big wedge or little, sexy wedge?

like most others have said no visable panty line, they make you feel sexy, no more granny panties, and if you're going to have a wedgie at least it's a little one.
