There are 2 types. The common one where the float is linked to the sending unit by a metal rod. The other is in-built into a hollow tube.

The purpose is to determine the level of fuel in the tank and through electrical mean present the fuel level on your fuel gauge. However, this method is not that accurate but is good enough for most car users.

If the floater is damaged or gotten itself stuck somehow, you fuel gauge will display zero, full or at s certain level at all times.

Gas tanks have floats in them, it's part of the sending unit of your gas gage, sometimes they fill with gas and stop floating.

A float, yes. this is part of the sending unit sensor. a wire runs from the sending unit to your gas guage.
