For my assignment i have to find out the difference between a barge and tug boat / supply vessel.

"A company once used to build barges now builds tug and supply vessels"

now this company is making losses, and my task is to reorganize the yard according to good management practice.

so people could you please tell me where i can find information on the differences (in terms of structure, machinery, material etc)?

Many thanks

hi! 1st, when you ask about tugs, barges and supply vessels, there are many different types of each vessel.

a barge is basically an unmotorized vessel. they can be river barges - for inland/protected waters only. of these you have deck barges, hopper barges (covered and uncovered) and also tank barges. there are also ocean going barges.

tug boats - many types of them too! inland 'push boats' for pushing inland barges. ocean going barges for salvage work, towing/pushing ocean barges, harbor tugs for docking/undocking ships, etc

supply boats - they make supply boats for the gulf of mexico, as well as for more rugid areas, like the north sea.

get a copy of marine engineers log - a magazine for the industry as this will have some information. also you can look into the various maritime academies in the US for some information. a local port authority may help you as well. but this should get you started, cant do your homework for you can we? good luck!

The difference between a Barge and Tug or Supply Vessel is one is powered the other is not.

In today's market if the Tug/Supply vessel is not profitable it's due to Bad Marketing or excessive cost.

Maybe when they made their transition they relied on old hands lacking the technology to understand power.

Business failure normally occurs when the people doing the job know more than the Boss.

Bad management rolls down hill and perpetuates ineptness as it doesn't present a threat to management.

If you evaluate a company for productivity and find answers like it's not my job. You found the problem.

Note: Burning doesn't know what he's talking about. A Supply Vessel is an over powered Tug that can take massive amounts of deck cargo into the worst nature can deliver.

A barge is a non motorized vessel A tug boat is a powerfully motorized vessel and a supply vessels is an adequate motorized vessel. Each vessel is contructed according to end use a barge is constructed to carry with a strong outer shell and strongly fixed tow point. Atug is a smaller but strongly made vessel that has a very strong engine griving powerful screws for the purpose of towing such as barges larger ships etc it has strong winch mounts and towing points as well as strong outer shell wel supported for pushing as well as towing. A supply vessel has a strong goods carrying shell and is motorized with sufficiently powerful an engine to carry its full load .~~
