Because "this day and age" has not escaped its past. Blacks are still discriminated against, and whites are still hold the reins of power. We can pretend like this isn't true anymore, but that is just a lie. The fact is that blacks are still statistically less likely to get a decent promotion, make less money than whites, have less opportunities, and are still subject to racial slurs and So...
**Why is it ok to claim "Black Power" but "White Pride" is racist?
Two reasons. One is the same reason it was ok for our founding fathers to rise up against the British. They felt that they were being oppressed. Perhaps there were more peaceful ways to deal with the problem, but they felt trapped and desperate. Many blacks still feel that way today. Most of them, if they are not old enough to have experienced this themselves, still have relatives that were beaten, forced to use second-rate bathrooms and restaurants, and couldn't find a decent job because of their color. It has not been that long. The second reason also has to do with history. "White Pride" is associated with the white supremacists and KKK members that invented the phrase. So long as those kind of people push "white pride," then "white pride" will be associated with those filthy monsters. Who would want to be associated with them? "Black Power," however, is a relic of the civil rights movement. At least it is a response to racism, and not a cause of it. I agree that it is a phrase that should go away, but it won't until we create an environment where it isn't a perceived necessity.
**Why is it acceptible for associations like NAACP , UNCF, etc to promote themselves but if caucasians had "Help whites go to college" we'd be sued?
Same reasons as above. Whites don't NEED organizations to promote them, because they are not oppressed or discriminated against. WE ARE IN POWER! I know you'll probably cook up the old, "Well, I know someone who knows someone who lost a job to a black person," but guess what? A small few anecdotal arguments (most of which are lies or exaggerations anyway) don't disprove an overwhelming amount of statistics that PROVE that blacks are still not treated fairly. Those associations you mention were created during a time of racial crisis in our country. When that racial crisis is fully resolved, those organizations will be forced to go away. In the meantime, if they didn't still exist, blacks would suffer for it. I guarantee it.
You say you are not a racist and that we should still promote civil rights. I believe you. BUT... if you really mean that, you might want to take a diversity class or two or study race history in our country better. You appear to be a little ignorant about it. Better yet, take some sociology classes on race in the present, and you will find out that things are not so equal right now. THAT is why so many or these organizations and pro-black phrases are still around. You are right that race shouldn't matter... but it does. Whites are the reason, not the victims.
That said, I also think you are mistaking the use of the "race" issue on government applications. For one thing, they are legally only optional. You don't have to fill them out. That is the law. Second, if you do fill it out, they have NO impact on whether or not you are hired or receive a service. They are only there for statistical purposes. It is funny how paranoid we whites can get when our race is not the one trying to escape hundreds of years of discrimination.
Hope that helps. I don't mean it as an attack on you, but you bring up an important topic. Too many people want to sweep racism under the rug, but it is still a powerful force in our society. We all need to better understand it.

The Naacp was created by WEB Dubois, at a time black Americans had no rights. It was this organization that represented people of color. Is it needed in this day in age?
That depends on the people. The Naacp is not as big as it once was, and it still represents and recognizes people of all races. It is not a racist organization. In 2000 it filed a law suit against the US government in many states, for the voting privilages that were denied to the people even when they were registered to vote, during the 2000 presidential election! (Major problem)
BET is a channel owned by white people. Its a channel that showcases videos for R&B and Hip Hop, it also showcases Gospel music and Church broadcast. It also showcases news dealing with the issues in the black community that so many non-blacks on Y A complain about.
BET came into play at a time when there were no black shows on televison, when MTV and Vh1 would not show any R&B or Hip hop video's.
Today is it needed? Lets leave that to the people to decide. The black and Non-black people who watch the channel
Should the lifetime channel be done away with, because its a channel that caters specifically to women?
Y M, Madomoselle, Vouge and other magazines cater almost specifically to caucasian women. it happens every now and then, that you will see a women of color featured in those magazines. They don't cater to the specifics in health, diet and the livelihoods of black men and women as essence, Ebony, and Jet do.
I would encourage you to watch and purchase some of the magazines you mentioned and see if you can understand what I am talking about!

I agree it is racial prejudice. But race shouldn't be removed from applications of jobs, schools, colleges, or Government positions because then we'd have no idea how many different races are in the USA. If black people can have their own colleges then other other races should be able to have their own race colleges as well. It's not fair that Blacks get more scholarships then other races and it's not fair that only Blacks get their own ethnicity college but other races can't. I think that if it isn't going to be equal then blacks shouldn't have their own scholarships or own race colleges.

I have a feeling it will probably change soon enough. Mainly because of two reasons:
1. I hear many whites today complaining (in private), about the same thing you're talking about. Biases, etc... and,
2. Racial changes (in the US that is) are leading ethnic statistics to differ to the point to which whites and hispanics will be neck-to-neck around the turn of the century (possibly sooner). When that happens white ethnic services will increase as they are towards minorities now - because whites will no longer be the majority.
Times change... we all just change with it. But I guess the a$$hole that gave me a thumbs down disagrees. To him/her everything stays the same and nothing ever changes.

You are in serious denial-- you are a racist. Face it, we are all racists. It is a part of our brain wiring to sort people by the way they look. What is wrong is when we use physical appearance as a way of sorting people into "good and bad." Every time a person asks the questions you are asking, they are racist. Most all other tv channels, magazines are filled with pretty white people, with a few people of other races and cultural backgrounds to make the right demographic for advertising.
I ask you this: Why is there a BBC America? Comedy Central? History Channel? Because people who buy stuff are willing to watch them, and advertisers know it, and pay money to display products that will be bought by people who are interested in the stuff on those channels. You will never see an ad on Lifetime for Queen Helene's Cholesterol hair conditioning cream. And you will never see an ad for tampons during a NASCAR race...

There is a double standard...look what Bill Imus said, I think his language was disgusting and yes racist, but rappers say it all the time.
I personally think their language is disgusting too, but because a majority of them are African-American they are not being called out for their language.
When Bill Imus uses these disgusting words he's fired, and now getting sued.
America has become so afraid of hurting minorities that it keeps dishonest double standards that affects all their citizens, no matter what their color, race, nationality, or gender.
Btw, I myself am a minority

These questions make me sick. Look around. If Black People didn't have those things. We wouldn't see Black people on T.V. or the Magazines. White people don't need a channel because they already have most of them. White people don't need a magazine because they are already in most of them. Get what I'm saying. You are the majority- so I see you more on T.V. then I see my people.
